“The CompanY”: 24 years of quality music

“It’s an anomaly”, Moy Ortiz remarked when he was asked about his feeling towards their 18th album entitled “Group Hug”. “With the Philippine music industry turning into a bad phase, it’s a very rare opportunity for a group or even a solo performer to have album number 18.”

It was a very entertaining experience interviewing two of the members, Jay and Moy, of the premiere vocal group and country’s leading pop-ballad group, “The CompanY”. Known for their undying songs, “Pakisabi na lang” and “Now that I have you”,  this hailed top OPM group was composed of five members - Sweet Plantado (soprano), Annie Quintos (soprano/alto), Cecile Bautista (alto), Jay Marquez (tenor) and Moy Ortiz (tenor 2/ bass).

Just last May 22, 2009, the group had an incredibly entertaining show at the Eastwood Mall Open Park entitled “The COMPANY Live”. The venue was jam-packed with audiences from different ages proving that the singing group suits the musical cravings of diverse listeners. The show became part of their “Group Hug” album promotion and it was no surprise that all of their albums were sold out during the event.

Released last December 2008, the group’s newest craft, “Group Hug” is an album that serves as a tribute to the iconic groups who have left an indelible mark in the international music scene like ABBA, Queen and The Carpenters. The album has 12 tracks including Play that funky Music, Blame it on the boogieTake a chance, and others. This album proudly showcases the versatility of the group’s music with guest beat boxer DJ Mike of Akafellas.

During the interview, Jay mentioned that his favorite song in this particular album is “Take a chance”, which was originally performed by ABBA. “Maganda yung pagkaka-arrange ni Moy eh, nakakaindak”. On the other hand, Moy’s favorite: “Nandito Pa Rin Tayo”, was part of his contribution to the Original Pilipino Music catalogue. According to him, the song is about longevity. “You know, there are very few things that last in life like family and real friendship.” He also added that the song also talks about the “unbelievable” lasting relationship of their group.

The album is also very interesting as Jay and Moy spilled that “Group Hug” is completely a collaboration (done with Maestro Gerard Salonga and The FILharmoniKA Orchestra). It was also the very first album that Moy didn’t co-produced because according to him, Mr. Salonga did the final mixes of the album. It was their first orchestral album mastered in the States and it’s also their first time to have a video in one CD.

Even with so many scheduled gigs and out of town shows, both guys shared that they still manage to make the most out of their personal lives. Jay told us that his family understands his very hectic schedule. “During lean months naman, doon naming nakakasama talaga ang family”, he cited.

When asked about their professions if they’re not part of The CompanY, Jay noted that he would have focus on their family business producing commercials for TV and radio.

Twenty four years of good music and the group continues to serenade the Filipino public. “It’s really a blessing to have one another, kasi we’re a family. It’s very comforting.” Moy exclaimed when asked about how the group remains intact in spite of all the challenges that they have faced through the years. “In any life, there are always challenges, disappointments and heartbreaks naman eh. But at least, you are gaining in a little wisdom. It’s a sign of maturity.”

In addition, the group wants to thank all their fans who made them stay in the music industry for so many years. “Every single blessing is never taken for granted”.

I guess all of their fans including me (the newest huge fan of the group) should wait for the next performances of The CompanY. “2010 is a big year for us. We will be celebrating our silver anniversary. We will be having our concert on October next year, hopefully at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.”

So what about the capital letter “Y” in their group name? “The capital letter “Y” is a visual cue that we are a vocal group, because the company is so generic”, Moy explained.

Like good wine, some things do get better with age. This quote applies perfectly to The CompanY, “The Philippines’ Premiere Vocal Ensemble ” a senior vocal harmony group, who has been coloring the music scene in Philippines for almost 25 years. This Philippines’ premiere vocal harmony was established in 1985,  starting as back up vocalists for some reigning Philippines pop stars of the 80s, and later turning into a professional group that exists until today. It’s not easy to still be on top after more than two decades, but The CompanY proves they can. Not only staying strong but also getting better with age, just like a good wine. It’s not an easy task to maintain a vocal harmony group, where vocals are the main instruments. It needs a harmonious relationship, the perfect chemistry among the members and loads of creativity. Again, The Company has it all. Many albums, tons of hits, and huge achievements including 36 various music industry awards have already been produced. These facts have placed them as the most awarded recording vocal group in Philippines.
